Imagine swinging a golf club in a way that resembled Joe Cocker performing… it would be strange looking, but it might just work for you.
(Make sure you take a look at this classic performance by Joe Cocker at Woodstock singing “With A Little Help From My Friends” it’s brilliant stuff:)
Anyway, I was watching the tv show Parkinson the other night, and a performance by Joe Cocker singing “With A Little Help From My Friends” got me thinking about the modern “Picture Perfect” golf swings.
As for Cocker’s performance… it was magic to watch!
Now, having said that, if you’d never seen Joe Cocker perform, and you just caught a snippet of his performance, you would have every reason to be thinking “What Is This Crap”!
… to some people it is crap, even when they’ve seen the entire performance.
But to me, it was just magic.
Alone, the flying spit, dripping sweat, body contorsions, muscle spasms and jery movements are enough to scare any small child… but when combined, the end result is something unique.
It all blends wonderfully together with his husky voice… Cocker truly is unmistakable from any other performing artist.
Anyway, this got me to thinking about the end of an era for tournament golf… the loss of characters and unique, unmistakable golf swings.
Political correctness has also robbed us of a little emotional stimulus… whatever happened to “freedom of speech” (I’ll save that for another day).
The rant continues…
We may never have heard of, nor seen the phenomenal ball striking of Lee Trevinohad he been convinced by others that his golf swing would not work… he found what worked for him.
Had Arnold Palmer tried to adopt a more “beautiful” follow through and finish position, he to may not have achieved what he did.
Doug Sanders and Allen Doyle’s “Compact Swings”, John Daly’s “Long Swing” they’re not pretty, but they have served them well.
You have to applaud Jim Furyk’s dad and coach (who is a member of the PGA) for not trying to “fix” his unique backswing… it to has served him well.
As you can tell… the old saying:
“there’s more than one way to skin a cat”
…applies true to golf.
I just hope we don’t end up seeing them all skin it the same way.
I look forward to seeing the next self taught super star of the game that comes from nowhere and captures our attention…
Sure, with all the modern coaching and instruction available today, this type of golfer is becoming extinct… but there’s still one or two out there waiting to come along and I can’t wait to see them.
So get down and dirty and use your unique qualities.
