I was just reading a great article over at TheSandTrap.com titled “80% Swing Speed”.
It highlighted to me a number of the benefits associated with having above average swing speed.
The article mentioned how Tiger Woods normal 8 iron travels 158 yards… that in itself is not all that interesting, what is interesting is that he can also smack his 8 iron around the 200 yard mark in certain situations when needed.
That’s a massive difference in distance.
How is this possible?
Well, because Tiger Woods has plenty of Swing Speed, most of the time he’s able to “throttle back” and focus on control with his iron play.
The poor old (especially the old) weekend hacker who has the swing speed of a hibernating sloth, trys to make up for it by swinging all out on every full shot.
Doing this generally ends poorly… they get out of balance, out of time and their rhythm is like that of a breakdancing robot!
This lack of control not only kills their swing speed, it kills any chance of getting a quality strike on the ball.
It’s a little bit of the EGO factor coming into play…
Most hackers would be better off taking more club, swinging in a controlled manner, staying in balance and enjoy more consistency and greater results.
Players with higher swing speeds already need less club than the majority, so their ego gets in their way less.
The other “control” benefit of extra swing speed is that instead of hitting say a 7 iron into a green like everyone else, you may only need a 9 iron or PW. Shorter irons tend to have tighter “shot patterns” than longer clubs.
So get yourself some extra swing speed and enjoy greater control.
