Your Swing Speed

December 14th, 2007 · 3 Comments

If you don’t know what your is, I’ll tell you how to test it.

If you do know what it is… are you able to thump your chest and boast of your swing speed… or are you embarrassed by it?

Is it average – 75 to 95 mph

Tour player – 110 to 130 mph (113 mph average)

Or are you up there with the big boys on the Professional Long Driver Tour – 135 to 165+mph.

Good news is that wherever you now are, it’s possible for you to increase your raw swing speed by 10mph or more and add 20 plus yards of distance to your drives.

But first, you’ve got to know where you’re currently at?

I’ll let you in on a secret about how your mind works… once you begin to test something, this act alone is often enough to cause an increase or improvement in whatever it is you’re testing (swing speed in this case).

Testing something, gives your mind a target at which to aim at and then pass.

To test your swing speed you need access to either a Swing Speed Radar or some type of Launch Monitor that measures your swing speed.

By the way, some people call swing speed “”… I prefer “Swing Speed” because the speed is generated by YOU swinging the club.  “Club Head Speed”, to me is more of a passive term, and without you swinging the club, it would not be generating any speed.

Choose which term you want… but I’m sticking with Swing Speed, because the main contributor to the actual speed of the club-head at impact is how fast you’re able to swing the club.

Most club professionals, golf retail outlets or demo days will have some type of swing speed radar or launch monitor (you can also purchase your own Swing Speed Radar for between $100 to $150).  Just get yourself along to one of those, borrow a friends or buy your own and find out what your swing speed is.

I recommend you find out what your swing speed is with the Driver and also with your 5 irons… because these are the two clubs that are used most in testing and comparing swing speeds.

Make sure you’re nice and warm before testing… you don’t want to do it first thing in the morning after you’ve rolled out of bed.

You can test it while hitting balls and also without a ball there (your mind may be more free without worrying about hitting a ball).  Then write these down and keep handy, so you can compare next time you test.

Good luck and let me know your swing speed and what process you used to test it.

Sean, I’ve never taken a golf lesson before but I am a semi-pro athlete. The other day my swing speed was clocked at 128mph. Is there any way to tell what my “ceiling” as far as swing speed might be?
